Oh yum! I wanted to share this simple tutorial for how to make this in a baby size (approx. 36" x 42"). You will need: 42- 2 ½" printed squares, 13- ¾" x width of fabric (approx. 42'') white strips (approx. 10"), and 24- 3" x width of fabric grey strips (2 yards), Basic sewing/quilting supplies: a 6 ½" square template (I chose the fancy route and used a piece of paper), and a walking foot (optional). To finish it: Back and Batting (approx. 40" x 46"), and 4- 2 ½" x width of fabric strips for binding. *Note* Use a ¼" seam allowance All fabrics are sewn right-sides-together. How to make it: Use this piecing method (throughout the entire pattern for piecing)...
Stitch the white strips to both sides of the 42 printed squares. Cut and press to get this...
Square up your edges. Stitch the remaining white strips to the tops and bottoms of each square. Cut, press, and square edges. Stitch the 3" grey strips to the sides of the squares. Cut and press to get this...
Square up your edges. Stitch the remaining grey strips to the tops and bottoms of each square. Press. Don't worry about squaring up the edges. It should look like this...
Pull out your handy-dandy 6 ½" template and place it on top of your block like this...
Angle it to get the wonky look. Note that whichever direction your template is turned toward, your wonk will be in the opposite direction. Place your cutting ruler over the template...
to get this.
Okay, that took a while, but you are so close to being done!!! Lay out your blocks how you want. Six blocks in a row. Seven rows. Since the sides of your blocks are cut at an angle they will stretch and fray more easily. I would suggest not letting little people play with them just yet. :) They can love on it soon enough. Switch to the walking foot if you have one. Stitch the blocks, side-to-side, in each row.
Press seams. To reduce bulk I pressed the seams in rows 1,3,5, and 7 to the right. And seams in rows 2, 4, and 6 to the left. My preference. Do as you like. Stitch rows together. Be sure to pin seams! Press seams open. Ooo La La...you're done with the top!!! Layer your back, batting, and top. Quilt it. Bind it. And you're done!!! Now run, don't walk, to your washing machine! It's time to let the little one snuggle and enjoy it!
And the back...

I agree with Stacey! This would be an excellant pattern to use up those "special" scraps that we have hidden away... mostly because it highlights them with the white and solids around them. Beautiful and definitely on my list now!! BTW, I don't usually post comments but I have been a follower for awhile so I wanted to say congratulations on the pregnancy! I am also pregnant but I am scheduled for a c-section in 2 weeks!! I think I might be able to whip this pattern together before then.. :o)

Had a great time adapting this quilt pattern to make a youth sized quilt for my granddaughter--made the colorful squares an inch bigger. The finished quilt has 54 squares (6x9) and 40 by 60 inches. I added some quilting around the wonky inner squares, which was a bit time consuming, but cute. Would be happy to send a photo. Thank you, Kersten, for sharing.
