I was short on binding fabric…so I combed through my scraps and made a really scrappy one. The pieces were all cut about 6" long, give or take a couple of inches.
The tricky part is keeping the seams of the binding away from the mitered corners…I didn’t think that out before I sewed it on but all but I lucked out with all but one. It will just be the funky corner…there’s always at least one funky corner.
It’s a nice addition to a really simple quilt top!

I love a scrappy binding. 90% of my bindings are scrappy. :)

I'm digging it, can we have a reveal please!

Yep, scrappy is good!! Like the old saying, "Necessity is the mother of invention". I've been pushed to that solution too :-)
It's looking pretty: when do we get to see it?

I'm going to try this on the table runner I'm working on. "Start Small" is a good rule of thumb for me. ☺ Thanks for the tips about the mitered edges. Happy Saturday! ☺
Leslie
I LOVE scrappy binding but always forgot to do it! I can't wait for you to show us what you are putting it on!

Necessity is the mother of invention. I've a quilt to bind before Saturday, no time to buy more fabric so will be binding with a variety of sherbet pips scraps. Looking forward to the result.

That is really cute Allison. :0)

Count me in on the scrappy binding love!

Scrappy bindings are great, although a bit more work. Maybe that would be a good leader/ender project -- keep a pile of 2.5" strips next to your machine & piece them as you go. And yes, there is always the ONE corner....
Karen H
I thought it was only me that had trouble with 1 corner. Glad to hear it happens to everyone! :) Love the scrappy binding.
KaHolly
From your picture, it looks great. Hope you post the completed project when it's sewn down!!

I also love doing scrap bindings to use up those tail pieces. But you are right, sometimes I have to repin two or three times to miss the seams in the corners.
Frances
I've never used scraps before (not sup rising given i've only ever made 3 quilts). is there an issue with them not being cut on the bias?
Carol
Well what a great idea and it looks lovely.
I was supposed to be on a one day quilt workshop today but sadly, as I was the only one to put my name down, it was cancelled.

I put your button on my brand new blog because I love your site and I have this thing for chickens and fresh eggs. Great site.

When you make your scrappy bindings, do you cut them on the bias or with the grain? Making bindings is new to me so not sure how to do it.
Thanks!

super cute! I've yet to make a scrappy binding but yours looks so adorable, you've inspired me to give it a go!!
Melanie@Crafty Cupboard
I just had this moment of satisfaction knowing that I have 4 of the same fabric scraps as you. Ha ha ha!
I always have that one funky corner... even if I carefully plan ahead.
Lizzy
Super cute! Love it - especially the aqua fabric with the red and white flowers. Too cute! Who makes that?
Becky
I've done scrappy binding's a few times. It totally works. In the process of going through my scraps this year, I have pulled out all of my long, various width scraps and I am currently in the process of doing some pre-made binding so I can just grab what looks good for future quilts. I hope it will save me time in the end.
Angie
Adorable!

I love your scrappy binding especially with all your lovely fabrics. I,too have yet to make one, but I really like the look of them so maybe someday.....
I too have a question about a fabric.
In your post on February 6, you show a beautiful stack of fabrics you bought in Las Vegas. Please, what is the top gray one called or from what designer or collection is it? It is just perfect! I have never seen it before and here in Canada, we don't have all the fabrics you do. Thank goodness for the internet. I'm into a gray, red and white phase at the moment so I would dearly love to be able to purchase some, unless it is a discontinued line. Please let me know if you have the time? I look forward to seeing what you will create with that lovely stash and yes, the pink dots are adorable!
Good Luck with Baby Girl. Very gratefully yours, Luba

Great idea! I take my leftover binding and combine as you did. I have all sorts of prints and colors combined and plan to use for my many quilt block exchange scrap quilts. Nice way to have binding ready to go and also a way to not lose all those binding tails!
