Without looming deadlines of trade shows and fabric releases to speed up my pace, I’ve been slowly working on a few Spring patterns. Turns out that I really need deadlines, or I will procrastinate until the end of time!
The first pattern I started working on was this Picnic quilt pattern.
I grabbed a stack of fat quarters from my stash, mostly basics with a floral from Rifle Paper Co. and those cute apples from the Smol fabric line. I wanted this quilt to have a woven look, similar to Jelly Weave but with larger pieces and intertwined fabrics.
(This was before my new design wall…I swear quilt blocks nicely laid out on the floor instantly attract kids+pets to mess them up!).
The blocks in this quilt are laid out on point, and if you’ve never attempted an on point quilt, this is a great place to start! They aren’t as scary as they look!
Kaitlyn did the quilting on this, she chose the design and it’s perfect for it.
The backing came from Joann fabrics.
The Picnic pattern can be found here as a PDF, or here as a Paper version. I’ll share a couple more versions I made of it soon!
Happy Quilting! -Allison
This is fun. I’m wondering if it would be difficult to make each “stripe” a single color (even if it was different fabrics) to give this a little more order for someone who needs things to be a little more restful? I like the energy of your original design, but I know someone who would find it a little too much. Thoughts? Thanks for the sale price.
Hi Robby! I’m going to try to make a version like that with just four colors and make a free PDF to go with the pattern for that option. It’s a bit more cutting and figuring out, but it would be really pretty!
I tried to order the picnic pattern pdf and the app did not work.
Oh strange! Maybe my site was being slow or something!
Great pattern! Will be ordering this one.
Thanks Judy!
I love the picnic pattern. I have a good many of your patterns. I have used the positive quilt pattern over and over. Each time someone in my family sees a quilt, they want one “just like it”. :)
Thanks Lisa! And I’m glad your family approves! :)
I love this! It’s on my summer list of to do’s!
Thanks Melissa! My Summer to-do list is getting loooong! ;)
Picnic Quilt is a cool quilt. Love the plaid/interlacing pattern.
Thank you Sue!
I love this new pattern! I always enjoy reading your blog and looking at your beautiful patterns. .
Thank you Tammy! I can’t believe after all this time I still enjoy writing this blog and making all of the patterns! ;) Happy Mother’s Day!
Do you recommend choosing some solids for balance or would all prints be ok? I have some beautiful rifle paper co florals I’m dying to use!!
