My sister-in-law and I whipped this quilt out last weekend (a 4 day weekend to clarify!)…she drew out the design, I figured out the pattern, and we sewed like mad. We pulled it out of the dryer still wet, took the bad picture up there, and she took it home just in the nick of time.
I taught her how to free motion on my machine…and she sewed through her fingernail and out the other side of her finger. Yucky. At least we finished up the quilt and it turned out cute. We backed it with double sided minky and no batting. Most of the fabrics were a layer cake of Flurry, by Kate Spain for Moda.
Very cute-I really like the skyline at the top. This is the second post this week about people sewing over their own fingers-what's up with that? Super powerful machines? Going very, very fast? Hope she didn't bleed all over her adorable quilt.
Another cheerful and not your run of the mill repeat-pattern quilt! It's the second time today I've read of someone using minky to back a quilt. Can someone please tell me what it is and is it available in the UK?
I just googled it and it can be ordered online. I asked them whether it burns as fast as regular fleece and am waiting for a reply. I hesitate to make anything out of fleece for children because of the speed at which it burns. Fleece scraps would make great fire starters. Not a good idea for pj’s or baby blankets.
No pain no gain…though I think your sil took that too far. Hope she's ok!
Gorgeous quilt and what a quick finish in time for Christmas!
So cute! Yuck on the finger.
Very pretty quilt! One of these years I'm going to make a Christmas quilt!
Wow! You folks are amazing! Almost a quilt in a day! So cute…but so sorry for the pain…ugh! Enjoy your new quilt!
nice-great job designing it!
I really love this quilt! It is so versatile. It looks like a serene Christmas Village with the Christmas fabric.
Love the pattern you layed out…
Hasn't everyone run a needle thru thier finger at some point? We aways thought of it as a blood sacrafice to the gods of creativity .{only need one a lifetime }
WOW, I realize there were two of you but I am amazed that the quilt is completed so quickly. I just spent 5 days making a baby quilt ( disappearing 9 patch – easy right ?) from a flannel charm pack and some yardage… washed it and half of the ( charm pack ) seams ripped apart in the wash- the yardage fabrics are fine.
Sooo disappointing. Has this ever happened to you ?
I wonder if contacting the charm pack fabric company would get me any answers or if it would be another waste of time ?
Cute … looks like ice fishing houses sitting on an iced over lake. (you can tell I live in the cold north … hahahha)
Owweee!! Hope your sister's finger is o.k. This is just the perfect Christmas quilt. Not too Christmasy, just right!!!!
Super cute quilt! I especially like the night sky in the distance. :o)
Ouch for your sister in laws finger! Oy!
you just had to initiate her properly right?
that is a fantastic Christmas quilt, one that looks like it could hang around after Dec 25th, too :) hope your SIL is ok – I've sewn my finger before, but this sounds much more dramatic than my mishap {i bought a stilletto after my incident, and it is now my fav tool} Happy Christmas Sewing Season! hahaha :)
Ouch! too much pain, but a very fun quilt!
OH that is so cute! What a wonderful quilt!
Super cute! Wonderful that you can just whip up a pattern like that.. it is a fantastic patter too!
This is gorgeous! Will you share the pattern with us?
Darling. Is there a tutorial in the works? What size is the blovk?
I so wanted to finish a Christmas quilt this year (nope, trying again for next year lol). I have been busy watching you tube videos on FMQ. I think I am going to get brave and do my log cabin myself. LOVE that you have someone to quilt with. No one in my family, or my friends are quilters. They just all want me to make them one lol.
Beautiful quilt. You two are amazing to push through to finish it even with that awful injury! Well done! :)
Will this hopeful become a pattern. Of course with your sil permission

Very nice. The poor girl. I hope she's not scared away!
Happy stitching
Super cute!! I hope your sister's finger heals quickly. Ouch!!

So cute! Hope her finger is okay. :(

This is one of the cutest quilts I've seen in weeks! I so hope there is a pattern in pdf in the works. It's super cute!!!
Also do you use your regular machine to free motion or do you use a long arm? I'm just starting to get up the courage, but all I have to fmq is my regular machine. What are your feelings on this? A response would be so AWESOME!!
very cute! and you did it so fast!
That is an awesome quilt – I love it. Sorry about the finger – OW!
Will we be seeing a pattern? I could figure it out, I think, except for the portion on the top. Did you overlap the houses onto the sky there?
So sorry about your SIL's finger…ouch….
Please make this a pattern so I can by it and make a spring version!!!!!
YOUCH!!! I hope your sister isn't scared away from FMQ forever! This pattern is adorable; I love the way the houses are clumped in little groups, like a real village or neighborhood. Just lovely!
This is so cute!! I love it! I would love to see it in a pattern in your shop too.
Ok. I NEED THIS. Like NOW. :)
Your poor SIL! Hope she is ok!
Super adorable! I want one.
That is a very cute quilt! Thanks for sharing your creativity!
This is so great! I love all the houses and the skyline at the top is just perfect.
I LOVE THIS!! {shouty capitals} it's really really stunning. I might have to make one I think!
I hope her finger is not too painful now – the quilt is fantastic though – I love it! Faye
I love this quilt! It's such a fun pattern. I'm amazed that you managed to finish a quilt in a day, even with two people working at it. =) Hope that finger is all right!
Wow- talent galore in your family!! This is awesome
Oh my gosh I am obsessed with this!!!!!!!
I love it! Won't you consider sharing it in the
2012 Christmas Quilt Show.
So simple but so perfect.
awesome quilt!! Hope her finger is healing up nicely
LOVE the quilt!
I love this! You two did a great job…except the part about the needle through the finger. I'm coming to realize crochet & knitting might be safer for me. That's after I sliced my finger with my rotary cutter & thinned my hair with my seam ripper (don't run your hand through your hair while still holding seam ripper!) :) Can't imagine a needle through the finger-would pass out for sure!
Good gracious! Pattern to follow?
OWWWWW……..I did that once when I worked in a blue jeans factory ! Yikes, it hurts !
Bless her heart !
And that is one adorable quilt…..wish I'd made that this weekend !
Beautiful Quilt, great design. Sorry about the finger. Och!!!!!
Love the quilt design!
I had a babysitter sew through her nail when I was young during a 4-H meeting and still remember the sight of it to this day.
That is a really cute quilt ~ I love it! I sewed through my fingernail during a jr. high home-ec sewing class. I thought the teacher was going to pass out.
Ack! So adorable!! I love it.
well done to your sister in-law being her first quilt. Very cute. ;)
Sweet! Your SIL did a good job for her first one.
LOVE IT you once again show your creativity and give inspiration to all.
very cute! It's worth sewing over a fingernail!
I love the quilt. Cute pattern!!!! I hope your sister is ok. Gotta watch where you're goin'.
Love the quilt! Please make this a pattern!
I love this quilt! What a fun weekend!
Absolutely ADORABLE! I love the snowy ground and the colors are perfect….Christmasy but not just the normal red and green. I love throwing some aqua/blue into the mix. :)
Simple yet beautiful for Christmas! I was wondering though…was it hard to machine quilt with the minky fabric on the back? I find that stuff so hard to work with.
Super cute quilt! Sounds like a fantastic weekend (minus the injury!)
Amanda
Wow you girls are amazing and that had to be so fun (except for sewing through finger yikes). Great job! Can't wait to try the minky method sometime.
What a wonderful quilt—I LOVE it. :) Ouch, that sewing finger business must really hurt. :/
There is only one word to describe this quilt…LOVELY, LOVELY, LOVELY!
Right when I saw your pictures I was reminded of Swedish houses at the coast (there are some pictures like this or this.
I like how you constructed the blocks. Makes me want to make a pillow with this look with Swedish houses (as we love to travel Sweden). Thanks for sharing.
Please make this a pattern! Love it! hope the finger is ok.
4 days are you kidding?!?! That's amazing! Mine take weeks to complete and I drag my feet the whole way lol! It looks absolutely wonderful. Way to go you two! This pattern has so many applications, I love it as a Christmas theme. Hope the injury is healing and it didn't scare her away from free motion.
What a wonderful quilt! And in four days, seriously?! It's perfect :)
Such a cute quilt! I would have passed out if anyone sewed through a finger in my home. :S
I LOVE it! Are you planning on writing up a pattern or quick tutorial? :)
Oh my heck! I love it, I love seeing my sisters house and I love that you whipped it us so fast and shouldn't you make me one for Christmas? It's darling! Poor Finger!
I like this pattern, it is different and cute. Hope the finger is not to sore.
Yup, I would buy this pattern in a snap. Get to work my friend! J/K, I'm glad you enjoyed family time over the holiday and I'm especially glad your sister is feeling better – Ouch!
Cheers,
Chris
